Should congregations allow political leaders to visit congregants as part of election rallies? This is one of the questions prof Christina Landman touched on during her contribution as speaker at the Uniting Reformed Church’s Ecumenical Partnership Conference taking place in Durban this week.
Landman, a theologian speaking in her own capacity, pointed out that her talk was not aimed at “giving answers” but rather at putting difficult topics on the table, such as: Is the Uniting Reformed Church (URCSA) as church a political community or a spiritual community?
In this short video excerpt of her full lecture, Landman explains URCSA’s “dual identity” when it comes to politics in this church, which was formed in the same year that South Africa had its first democratic election, 1994. Video: Kerkbode
